Even though PCGS only rated this coin as an MS65 we believe it is much better. It is in an old rattler holder and it probably deserves a regrade. For sure the obverse is the most complete strike we have seen and it is rare. But even though the strike is nice this is a very unusual coin.
On the obverse the words STONE MOUNTAIN are slightly doubled across the bottom. Both horses' heads are doubled toward the rim. There are heavy die gouges around the S and NE in STONE. There is some date doubling, but perhaps the most interesting feature is a set of lines in the upper loop of the 9. This feature appears on multiple coins, so it is a die feature and not some random bit of clutter.
The reverse has really nice color and an equally strong strike except for the stars in the field. But missing stars in the field are not rare. Behind the eagle's head toward the rim is the only real flaw we can find and this is a small die crack that has just started to appear.
The toning on the obverse is the same as the reverse, just not as intense or broad. There are some oranges, reds, and greens that would be second and third cycle colors.
