Stone Mountain
Commemorative Half Dollar

09610694

Details

PCGS Designation: 9873

Certificate: 09610694

Grade: MS64

Obverse Die: Double 925

Reverse Die: Normal Die

Stars: 13/30

Notes:  This coin looks all right without magnification, but under close observation it has a lot of issues, particularly on the obverse.  The die appears to have been heavily polished and much of the detail for Jackson and Lee is missing.  Jackson's face has a eerie appearance where the left side of his head is missing and he has no eyes.  Lee is missing a portion of his right shoulder and there are missing portions of his coat, saddle, and left hand.

On the date the 9 and 2 are heavily pitted and there is a slight doubling of the 5 on the surface at the bottom.  We often see a slight doubling of Little Sorrel's head toward the rim and it is present on this coin.

There is some cud at the rim just above IN but it is mostly obscured by the holder.  This die shows all the signs of major failure and use beyond its normal life.  The die cracks on the reverse probably explain the excessive polishing.

But technically this is an uncirculated coin with few bag marks, so the grade might just be right as strange as it seems.
