Stone Mountain
Commemorative Half Dollar

22011055

Details

PCGS Designation: 9873

Certificate: 22011055

Grade: AU58

Obverse Die: Doubled 5

Reverse Die: Normal Die

Stars: 13/33

Notes:  This is a coin with a lot of issues brought on by die wear and reuse.  The grade appears to us to be right and there are a surprising number of stars visible on both sides.

But in the process of repolishing the die the Mint employees apparently got in a hurry or got sloppy.  On the obverse there are a lot of heavy polishing lines that show up in just about every area, and Little Sorrel's leg is just about polished out.  On the reverse the same polishing issues are there, but not as broadly.

The 5 in the date is doubled toward the inside of the loop, but not strongly.  This is not the date doubling normally referred to in the DDO variety.  The reverse has some doubling but it appears to be machine and not die doubling.
