Stone Mountain
Commemorative Half Dollar

26380660

Details

PCGS Designation: 9873

Certificate: 26380660

Grade: AU55

Obverse Die: Doubled 925, STONE MOUNTAIN, and Little Sorrel

Reverse Die: Normal Die

Stars: 13/31

Notes:  This is an unusual coin because at this grade the retention of the color seems somewhat unusual.  The toning is attractive and on the obverse retains some luster that adds to the appeal.

The colors on the coin are indicative of the middle of the second cycle in the toning process.  The bright yellows, reds, and magentas are all in this range.  The reverse toning is difficult to pinpoint and may be just a conglomeration of colors before and after the ones on the obverse.

There is a die crack on the bottom of the left wing that may have been longer before the coin was circulated.  This crack is consistent with many other coins and probably indicates a weak point in the design or the die creation.

This coin is also a Double Die Obverse, but we do not think it is the complete doubling seen on the coin in the Cherry Pickers Guide.  There is some doubling on 925, some in STONE MOUNTAIN, and Little Sorrel's head is doubled toward the rim.
