Stone Mountain
Commemorative Half Dollar
32029763
Details
PCGS Designation: 9873
Certificate: 32029763
Grade: MS64
Obverse Die: Doubled 25 and Little Sorrel Head
Reverse Die: Doubled HA
Stars: 13/34
Notes: This coin has a little something for everyone even though the obverse is badly discolored. There are no die cracks on the obverse which is rare. But the front edge of the head of Little Sorrel is doubled all the way from the top of the ear to the bottom of the head.
The numerals 25 are also doubled, but not the rest of the date. With the 19 and STONE MOUNTAIN there is some deterioration of the die and if there was doubling it is lost.
The letters HA have surface doubling in a pattern often seen on other coins. There is a die crack that starts at the letter F and then picks up at the letter R. We have seen this pattern on other coins but not in a broken pattern. This could indicate that this is the early die state of this die. There are other die cracks running along the left wing top that mirror others in the series.
And then to top it off there is actually a little bit of legitimate toning on the outside lower field of the reverse. This deep orange is in the middle of the second cycle of color and almost has a sunset yellow appearance.
