Notes: There are some tell tale signs of die doubling that seem to go with die rotation. Looking at the die crack through Traveler's head we expected this to have a doubled date, but it does not. So obviously this needs more study. We are finding a number of similar dies with the die cracks through Jackson's and Lee's heads and this one seems to be pretty far along in that sequence.
The reverse has some die cracks through the eagle's head and left wing. We are finding this to be quite common and it appears that this may be a weakness in the design that runs along the outer edge of the left wing. but above the wing it can travel off in different directions depending on the die.
The reverse is also in a late die state because the die is beginning to break down and small pieces of metal are being deposited around the coin in several areas. This is very evident at the rim above the eagle's head.
There is some reverse die doubling, but it appears to be strike and not die doubling. Another common area for doubling is in the letters F DO, and if it was present it was erased through damage. This coin clearly illustrates the concave nature of the lettering which almost looks like stamping, or repeated strikes. On many coins the letters are shallower in the center and higher on the top and bottom. But on this coin they are thinner toward the rim and have a decided "squished" appearance.
