Details

PCGS Designation: 9873

Certificate: 35069947

Grade: XF40

Obverse Die: Normal Die

Reverse Die: Normal Die

Stars: 13/30

Notes:  This is a great teaching coin because it illustrates how a coin can become discolored without losing grade.  To some this would be toning, but we view it more as discoloration.  But you need to look beyond the color for the detail to grade it.

All of the obverse stars are visible, and there is good detail to all the devices.  All of the date and legend are complete, but slightly worn.  Lee's glove, left leg, and hat brim have wear but still a lot of detail.  There is some flatness to the bridles and Traveler shows appropriate wear.

On the reverse there are 30 stars visible on the reverse which seems appropriate.  There is minimal wear on the eagle's high spots along the wing tops,, breast, and legs.  All lettering is still separated and distinct.
