Stone Mountain
Commemorative Half Dollar

35071289

Details

PCGS Designation: 9873

Certificate: 35071289

Grade: MS64

Obverse Die: Doubled 25

Reverse Die: Normal Die

Stars: 13/29

Notes:  This is a strange coin and perhaps PCGS just mislabeled it or they see something we do not see.  The date does have some doubling, but nothing else shows doubling on the obverse.

There is a die crack that runs through the first star and down through Lee's hat, but this is not the same die crack on the FS-101 variety.  Then there are clear signs of die deterioration and either planchet flaws or wear.  There is rim damage that looks like wear also.

Adding to the confusion is the reverse and in particular the eagle's breast.  It appears to us to be worn and not a poor strike.  There is a die crack that runs from the F down to the R and then picks up and runs across to the last tail feather.
