Notes:  When acquired in June 2018 this was the best coin in our collection for the combination of grade and eye appeal.  We would have given this coin a plus grade and we think it borders on an MS68 except for the small black make crossing Lee's sword and perhaps the toning at the top rim.  Lee's hat, glove, and leg are complete which is very rare.  The bridle is almost complete but has a little problem across the holster.

The eagle's feathers, breast, and wing tops are also complete making this a full strike.  On the reverse we can clearly see 28 stars and if we stretch the case we would add another 1 or 2 partial stars, so the fields are not fully struck.

It has the added attraction of the obverse and reverse double die making it a great addition to the collection.  The date doubling is not offset to the extreme but is in the right place, and the letter doubling in STONE MOUNTAIN is there but not extreme.  The head doubling on Little Sorrel is shown as a fine line that runs the length of the head.

The obverse die was also harshly repolished in places and shows as fine lines in various places around Jackson's and Lee's heads.  There are a number of polishing lines in various places on the obverse.

The reverse is very interesting and shows doubling at the F DO and bottom of SOLDIER.  The LL's in DOLLAR are also doubled but they look to be doubled from production and not die doubled.

There are several die cracks forming on the reverse on the eagle in areas where they often appear.  We found no die cracks on the obverse.
