Stone Mountain
Commemorative Half Dollar

36187479

Details

PCGS Designation: 9873

Certificate: 36187479

Grade: MS67

Obverse Die: Doubled 925, Little Sorrel Head, and a Portion of STONE MOUNTAIN

Reverse Die: Normal Die

Stars: 13/32

Notes:  In some ways this is a well struck coin with really nice detail in Lee's and Jackson's faces.  There is also good detail in Lee's coat and sword.  But the reverse is missing eight stars which would indicate that is is not as fully struck.

There are die cracks on both the obverse and reverse, and they are in familiar locations.  We often see a die crack in the head of Traveler, but the short die crack in the head of Little Sorrel is not common.

On the reverse the die crack at the top of the left wing is quite common and the one across the eagle's beak is also proving to appear frequently.

The date is doubled at 925 and perhaps on the 1, but the first digit is not clearly struck.  There is doubling in STONE MOUNTAIN but not as complete as is often seen in the major variety.  The head of Little Sorrel is also doubled toward the rim and above the ears on the head.
