Stone Mountain
Commemorative Half Dollar

37579812

Details

PCGS Designation: 9873

Certificate: 37579812

Grade: AU58+

Obverse Die: Normal Die

Reverse Die: Doubled HA

Stars: 13/30

Notes:  Although difficult to see in these photographs, the die cracks along the top of the left wing have become die breaks, and the small die crack joining the HA of HALF is just becoming visible.  This is the first example of the die break in the HA that we have found.

The wear is obvious on the coin, so it is not mint condition.  There are 30 stars visible on the reverse, so a good strike.  There is also excellent feather detail in the wings and on the eagle's breast.

Another thing that helps the grade on this coin is the die state.  Most Stone Mountain Halves are struck from dies that collapsed around the rim, giving the lettering a flattened look.  This coin has almost complete lettering without the collapsed look.
