Stone Mountain
Commemorative Half Dollar

84340057

Details

PCGS Designation: 9873

Certificate: 84340057

Grade: MS64

Obverse Die: Normal Die

Reverse Die: Normal Die

Stars: 13/24

Notes:  We don't know what to make of the discoloration on both sides of this coin.  At first we thought it was grease left on the die that somehow discolored after it was transferred to the struck coin.  But whatever the substance is, it appears to be corrosive not just lying on the surface.

The discoloration is so bad on the reverse that only 24 of the 35 stars are visible, and that might be a stretch.  The reverse is also poorly struck making many of the field features weak and difficult to see.  Even without the discoloration there would be far fewer than the full complement.

The obverse is a stronger strike and the detail is relatively full.

We would not classify this coin as toned, only discolored with foreign matter.  If there are any die cracks they are obscured by the discoloration.
